Dr Husham Al-Shather is a consultant in Pain Medicine. He has acquired a wide experience in the management of acute and chronic pain conditions. He provides a variety of interventional and non-interventional treatments for this specific patient population. He is the clinical governance lead for pain medicine at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.

Since he joined The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust as a consultant in Pain Management, he has developed a very good reputation in providing patients with optimal clinical care and scored highly for rating of clinical effectiveness and patient satisfaction. This has been gained by working in a robust multidisciplinary team which emphasises the use of proven and evidence based medicine, an approach that achieves excellent clinical results in the independent practice too.

Qualifications:

Dr Husham Al-shather is a consultant in Pain Medicine at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

He completed higher specialist training in Pain Management and Anaesthetics at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London. He studied his Advanced Pain Training at St George’s Hospital and Ashford & St Peter’s NHS trust. In addition, he undertook a Regional Anaesthesia Training at Queen Victoria Hospital.

Husham specialises in the management of Lower back pain and sciatica, Neck pain, headaches, joint pain (shoulder, hip, knee and ankle joints pain), Neuropathic pain, abdominal and pelvic pain, acute pain, Complex regional pain syndrome, Post-stroke pain and Fibromyalgia. He performs a variety of interventional and non-interventional treatments for patients with acute or chronic pain. This includes epidural steroids injections, joints injection, facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, nerve root injections, radiofrequency treatment, peripheral nerve blocks and sympathetic blocks.

In addition, Husham works in private practice alongside his NHS work building up a successful private practice in and around Berkshire.

Beside Pain Management, Husham qualified in Aesthetic Medicine from the Harley Academy, the largest postgraduate Aesthetic Medicine provider in the UK.

Specialist Interests

Husham pain specialist areas of expertise include the treatment of Neuropathic Pain, such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), as well as Botox injections for musculoskeletal spinal pain and Migraine. During his clinical experience and research, he adopted inventive procedures that are only adopted by few pain management specialists, for example, ultrasound guided nerve entrapment release, capsaicin patch (Qutenza) for neuropathic pain and radiofrequency neuromodulation therapy.

Husham is also an expert in Ultrasound Guided pain procedures and Regional Blocks. He is a faculty member teaching at various national and international courses and he kept himself up-to-date in the recent development in Pain Medicine. He has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals and book chapters in the field of pain medicine and anaesthesia.

Husham’s key interests include teaching, research and publication in the field of pain medicine.

Outside medicine, Husham spends what little free time he has reading about the activities he used to pursue. Since the arrival of his two children, family commitments have overtaken almost all other activities on the home front, and they are his main focus. He would like to say that he is still a keen tennis player and spends some time cycling and playing golf.
